Scott Layman, 74, Norman, died Saturday, Oct.5.

He donated his body to the University of OKlahoma Health Sciences Center. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Newell, Iowa, to Denton and Jessie Layman. He graduated from Newell High School in 1939, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1940. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, survived the Japanese attack, and later served in the Battle of Midway. He served 20 years with the U.S. Navy, including duty at the Naval Air Station in Norman from 1952 to 1955. He retired from the Navy in 1960, settling in Norman to complete his degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1962.

He taught earth science at West Mid-High from August 1962 until his retirement in 1985. An avid bowler for many years, he served as president of the Central Oklahoma Bowling Association, was inducted into the Norman Bowling Hall of Fame, amd, at age 72, bowled a perfect 300 game.

Mr. Layman is survived by a brother, Dean Layman of Newell, Iowa; seven children, Durlan "Lanny" Layman of Mission Viejo, Calif.; Nancy Davis of Plano, Texas, Virginia "Ginny" Klein of Merritt Island, Fla., James P. Layman of Santa Fe, N.M., Phillip Layman of Arlington, Texas, Elizabeth Ann Kirsner of Lawton, and Christopher Layman of Phoenix, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren.
